The movement towards potential futures is at the centre of various artistic investigations presented in the FdS’ after language exhibition. The works reveal a grammar that seeks to break free from the constraints imposed by what is presented to us as normal or even natural. The exhibition at Urgent Paradise thus reveals the possibility of errors in a predefined code, in order to stimulate the process of collective imagination.

The action develops from the activation of the Prótese Anca : a series of gestures that aim to self-generate and to redefine oneself within the social parameters, creating new bodily possibilities through visionary fictions. The two performers, Sumé Yina and Anis Yaguar, utilise their own life experience to create a ritual where the exchanging of their body membrane becomes possible. The contact and movement generated by the encounter of their skins creates new forms of communication and makes the border between outside and inside become porous. The two artists open up new possibilities for transmutant bodies, the corpas. Cyborgs in a state of performance.

    Sumé Yina
Sumé Yina is a Brazilian artist, filmmaker and transmutant. She develops her experimentations through performance, video and the making of objects. Currently, her research is oriented towards the investigation of the shock between her corporality and the physical and immaterial spaces of colonial constructions. Through the recovery of her ancestry, she works on memory, the subversion of symbols, ways of being in the institutional field, and shows her own presence as a trans and indigenous identity in an urban context.

    Anis Yaguar
Anis Yaguar is an artist, transmutant, performer and creator of visionary fictions born in Rio de Janeiro. Her work fluctuates between performance, video and the construction of prostheses. Her field of research revolves around the questioning of gender discourses and their cathartic conditions through the subversion of imposed symbologies, looking for forms of manipulation and transmutation of the flesh. There is a permeability between her transitional, astral and self-gestational processes.

In her project, L’An 2021, released in 2020, Nygel Panasco illustrates a vision of the year 2021 with the basic idea that a change of era is coming. Here, alien beings are stranded on earth and bond with human beings. In this story, the bodies represented undergo and provoke violence, tenderness, and pleasure. Nygel Panasco proposes a vision of the future that acts as an observatory or commentary of today's human systems.
Nygel Panasco, born in Douala in 1995, is an illustrator and musician based in Strasbourg. She studied for 5 years at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin, and her graphic work is presently deployed in the networks of fanzinat and self-publishing.

The piece is an installation composed of several metal plates, connected by plastic bed threads. A net that casts protection spells all around itself and also functions as a place to attract miracles. The net looks like a spider web. The two sides of this net resemble the two faces of love, one side is tender and welcoming, the other one is sharp, tricky and dangerous.

Born in Gubbio, Luca Frati graduated in 2020 from the Accademia di belle arti in Venice in the Visual Arts department. He is currently finishing his Master in Visual Arts at écal. He is attracted by practices of self-narration through performances, drawings, texts and installations.

An exploration of desire and the ways it reproduces itself. How does the spectator react when faced with the seducing exposition of a body? These photographs also talk about gender expression as they question the normative representation of a sexualised body. How does the flesh react to the stress of gender binarity? The images aim to claim a space of non-definition, an allure that poses itself outside of the binarity, a celebration of non-conformity, an incarnation of presence and of sexual tension. The spectator is in the middle of a conflict, and the title asks an ironic question: does the body you are looking at disturb you?

In this work, Nicolas Maxim Endlicher superimposes two stories: the launch of the television channel MTV and the global epidemic of HIV and AIDS, both of which began in the early 1980s. In a graphic gesture, he transforms the three letters of the MTV logo into the letters HIV, adding the “+” symbol as an indicator of HIV-positivity. This gesture challenges MTV as a commercial apparatus of mainstream culture, while poetically linking a global music culture to a global pandemic, as a tribute to the many artists and musicians who disappeared in the early years of the AIDS crisis.

Nicolas Maxim Endlicher is an artist, a DJ and an activist from Berlin. He’s also one of the founders of the Herrensauna, the notorious queer party from Berlin. His work as a curator has had influence in the musical, artistic and fashion spheres, with a sincere appreciation of subcultural movements and their aesthetics.

PRÓTESE ANCA, Sumé Yina and Anis Yaguar (BR - sculpture and performance)

The installation is made of resin, urucum pigment and rose quartz. The prosthesis was developed during the two artists' residency at Galeria Refresco in Rio de Janeiro. The two performers stage and produce visionary fictions that allow them to imagine new dissident forms of existence against the colonial cis-tem. Through the use of resin and minerals, their inorganic intervention creates a ritual that challenges fixed ideas about biology and the notion of naturalness. The prosthesis is activated by the performance Culto a corpa and remains visible for the duration of the exhibition at Urgent Paradise.

installation · content warning : none

The act of crying, for joy or pain, is a form of complete abandonment which connects us with a primordial dimension of feeling. Whenever it occurs, this ancestral act highlights a moment of emotional vulnerability, sometimes stigmatised or associated with certain gender roles in many cultures. Vulnerability reminds us of what is beyond ourselves and nonetheless part of us. It represents a central dimension of the process that makes us bodies, as noted by Judith Butler. Crying pushes us to get closer, as mammals and as parts of a system that existed before us, that will exist after us and that does not have the human being at its core.

TOMBOYS DON’T CRY is a Milan-based queer artistic conglomerate of girlx and non-binary creatures, who have been promoting post-identity adventures since 2011, fostering a culture of visual, sonic, performative research and experimentation connected to the LGBTQAIXYZ community. Their collaborations include: SPRINT— Independent Publishers and Artists’ Books Salon (Milan); Mothers & Daughters - A lesbian & Trans Bar, Buenos Tiempos Int. (Brussels); Arts of the Working Class (Berlin); Cruising Pavilion, Architecture 16th Biennale di Venezia; Girls Like Us magazine, Kunsthalle Bern; Loud & Proud festival (Paris).

This installation and performance puts two people into dialogue through choreography. Glances, pipas, a poetry battle and a dance. Read me poems and make me laugh raises questions about identity and community in relation to a world that evolves between the analogue and the virtual. The notion of space - inside/outside, private/public, real/virtual - is an important issue in the construction of the performance.

    jpp
Writing is an important part of jpp's artistic practice. She always starts by creating texts and then tries to find a form for them: editing, video, sound, installation or performance. She is inspired by intimacy, her daily life and social media. Themes related to identity, sexuality and gender are central to her work. jpp collects texts and images on Instagram in order to give them a life beyond screens. She also uses social media posts as a way empower herself.

The ways of love are strange. Sometimes they lead to the neighbours patio roof or to the music stand of a grand piano in the university basement. Valentina and Sonnili both live in an intimate relationship with an object. Although their sensibilities are a barrier to social acceptance, the major themes running through their stories are common: life, comfort and the fact that the world is more beautiful when shared.

Young Boy Dancing Group is a collective based in Zurich, they remain best known for rawly intimate performances in which the materiality of bodies encounters the ethereality of light. Over the last half-decade, YBDG has worked in video, photography, fashion, sculpture, and installation. As this precarious brigade continually swells and tightens, picking up new performers at each location, its core values persist as a fierce rampart against mainstream culture: somatic exploration, not sexualization; exposure, not ex hibitionism; community liberation, not bridled isolation; object-identification, not commodification; and DIY, not institutional polish.

A molding experience where the formal ambiguity and the caricatural potential of the hyena clitoris are explored, as well as the transgressive figure of the hyena and its guttural laugh is embodied. The ambiguity of the gesture and of the form are a gateway to think about our relationship with body and gender, how we inhabit these notions, and how empowerment can take force through touching and hybriding our own body. This is an ironic self-caring experience looking to question gender dysphoria, and exploring water and clay as sensual and political tools.

    30’

Sonda is an event where Castiel transforms her body into a probe in order to discover other communication systems. She compares it to the specific moment when the caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Or, when on another planet, our vocabularies become useless.

Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro was born in Brazil and belongs to an AfroBantu family lineage. Her art is multifaceted, including photography, writing, video making, dancing, painting and installation. She also has a master's degree in Clinical Psychology.

With her artistic and academic practice, Castiel studies the principle of Transmutation as an unavoidable destiny. For that, she incorporates and immerses herself in the Bantu ontology, taking healing and care as an ephemeral moment of freedom. Currently, Castiel studies and builds interspecific spirituality and ancestry.

This performance is a premiere, co-produced by the FdS, presented by Castiel at the end of her residency at La Becque.

    after language Opening exhibition

This play, created by Alice Oechslin and Ulysse Berdat, tells the story of Milla Pluton, a field dyke, and Beatrix, an accidental spatiotemporal traveler who lands stark naked in Milla’s garden one night. The performance combines musical comedy, video, a recorder solo, puppet theater, cabbage dance and science-fiction. It proposes to envision a community of fluid living beings such as plants, animals and humans who come together to invent new ways of relating and loving.
Alice Oechslin and Ulysse Berdat met in 2020, when they were studying at Geneva’s Haute Ecole d’Arts et Design (HEAD). In addition to their love for the lemanic punk scene and picon beer, they realized that both their works usually interacted. They share themes : queer identity, anarchy, the Vaud or Jura countryside, science-fiction, and formal ideas : creating characters, multidisciplinary approach, mixing genres, humour, and how do we do something right here right now.

BARE-TT was formed in 2016 in Geneva by Katia Barrett and Sandar Tun Tun as a duo exploring the possibilities of sound narration within experimental electronic music. Since 2017, BARE-TT has used the term Speciation as a conceptual framework to reflect on the velocity of biotechnological advances and how the notion of otherness creates the stealthy terrain for the evolution of our conceptions of the human being. It is a process of continual reversal that draws on science fiction and “science stranger than fiction”. These ideas permeate their sound space, leading them to structure and imagine what kinds of new forms to develop and how music or the space of performance can manifest sensations of hyper evolution.

"Decolonize the dancefloor" is a performance that can be described as embodied, complex, percussive, funny, resilient, committed, and political, just like its performer. This dance-conference is a tool for thinking about the systems that shape our daily social relationships. Racism, privilege(s), domination(s), resistance, creation, community(ies), these fundamental concepts are dissected under an acerbic, mobile, decolonial magnifying glass, with the artist’s movements giving rhythm to the speech.
At the crossroads of several disciplines and identities, Habibitch is a queer-fem artist-activist born in Algeria and based in Paris, building themself an artistic practice as awake as their political practice. "Dancing her politics and politicizing her dance" is the punchline of this multifaceted artist.

    Beauty privilege in queer environments
    roundtable · in french · 90’

In militant queer and feminist circles that fight to free themselves from several forms of oppression and norms, why is the question of beauty often overshadowed? How do these beauty stereotypes amplify other forms of discrimination (fatphobia, ableism, racism, etc.)? The round table will address these questions, and more generally the issue of beauty privilege in feminist queer circles.

    Speakers :
Habibitch, queer-fem artist-activist at the crossroads of several disciplines and identities, whose work focuses on gender and intersectionality
Hazbi, Doctor and teacher specialised in discriminations and organisational justice and musician who questions through their practice their bond to their deviant body
Sherazade, author of the essay on fat-phobia "T’as un joli visage" and creator of the Instagram account @stopgrossophobie

    Facilitator :
Costanza Spina, independent journalist, founder of the queer feminist media Manifesto XXI, member of the Journalopes collective

    Le Lou (FR)

    live · rap · 45’

He is one of those rappers that you don't want to put in a box. With influences from Trap, Boom-bap, Jazz, Nu Soul, House, Pop, Le Lou loves music and when he performs, you quickly understand why. A rapper, a beat-maker, a cheeky crooner, a mischievous kid, what he prefers is being on stage. He speaks to his queer siblings and to those who are tired of the cis-tem, to those who are not heard, who are waiting for the party to start and the world to end. Between humour and sarcasm, fury and sensuality, Le Lou has fun, plays with the rules and refuses to be pigeonholed.

Sunday afternoon, it's Bingo Drag! Hosted by Royale Cattin and Diamanda Callas, interspersed with laughter and songs, this big bingo party in the Salle des Fêtes will be intergenerational, very queer and very glittery.

We have invited our friends, the LGBT elders of the 360° association, the tamalou and the babagayas, to play with us. Bring your parents and grandparents, your children if you have any, don't forget your lucky charms, put on your best Sunday clothes, grab a drink of luck, and come win incredible and never imagined prizes. We will reinvent the gift basket with a touch of FdS special juice (actually no, a loooot of juice).

You don't have to speak French or have a perfect hearing, because the numbers will be broadcast on a screen! The Salle des Fêtes is accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.

Sylvain and Davide (Diamanda Callas and Royale Cattin) are whimsical and committed artists who share a fascination for the art of drag. Sylvain lives in Paris and works in the cabarets of Pigalle (mainly for the famous Madame Arthur's house) where his stage persona, Diamanda Callas, sings in corset and high heels. Davide lives in Lausanne, he's an actor and a performer in the theatrical and performative panorama of French-speaking Switzerland, and we cannot wait to discover him under his new name: Royale Cattin! When the two of them get together, the banter flies and the atmosphere is electrified - So it was only natural that they invited themselves to the FdS to offer their services as hosts for a Bingo!

The young queer artist is neither afraid to say what she thinks, nor to provoke with her words. In addition to having impressive rapping skills, she also is a talented musician who learned at an early age to play multiple instruments, such as percussion, guitar, piano, saxophone and clarinet.

    Shakedown, Leilah Weinraub (USA)
    2018 · OV English with FR subtitles · 1h11

    Feature film: out of competition
Already programmed at the festival in 2018, we are bringing back this favorite film for our 10th anniversary!

Shakedown is the story of Los Angeles’ black lesbian strip club scene and its genesis. Owned and operated by women, underground and illegal in nature, the club Shakedown is the darker, faster, younger iteration of this dance culture. Shakedown emerged from a post-RIOTS, post-OJ, post-integration but still very racially divided Los Angeles. In this fractionated city, Shakedown is an independent, all black and all female cash economy. The film is a window into this world.

Shakedown chronicles the explicit performances and personal relationships of the party’s dancers and organisers including Ronnie-Ron, Shakedown Productions’ creator and emcee; Mahogany, the legendary “mother” of the community; Egypt, their star performer; and Jazmine, the “Queen” of Shakedown.

This dj set will be broadcasted live on radio 40

The Slow Jam Sundays began during the 2020 lockdown, via @annathesupernova's Instagram account. Acting as an outlet for bonding during isolation, they allowed Anna to express her need for tenderness and to create a virtual erotic space for queer racialised people. The Slow Jam Sunday performance is conceived with T.L.C (Tender, Love & Care). The artist draws from her vinyl collection to create a spacetime where the power of the erotic is unleashed. Slow rhythms, sensual vibes and bodies of friends and lovers coming together, touching... slow dancing. The last moment where desire is expressed, just before the club closes its doors...

Anna Tje or AnnaTheSupernova lives between the Paris region and Vienna. Navigating between contemporary creation, research and collective practices for transformative justice, they uses moving image, poetic narrative, sound, her voice as an instrument, gesture as well as archival conversations, vegetal and fruit matters, to explore notions of intimacy, resilience, love and joy from a black, afrofuturist and queer perspective.

    after language Closing exhibition

This installation and performance puts two people into dialogue through choreography. Glances, pipas, a poetry battle and a dance. Read me poems and make me laugh raises questions about identity and community in relation to a world that evolves between the analogue and the virtual. The notion of space - inside/outside, private/public, real/virtual - is an important issue in the construction of the performance.

Themes related to identity, heritage, gender and sexuality are at the heart of her work, which extends to performance, installation, sound and video. Sensitive to everyday gestures and domestic settings, she explores the body in its social or intimate context by evoking images that navigate between reality, dreams and fantasies. Through elements linked to Iranian collective memory, pop culture and social networks, her works share intimate forms of expression and dialogue with the hybridity of her identity.
