Usually when we sit down to write this editorial, we think about all that we’ve been through so far. But this year, as the festival was approaching, we realized that our thoughts were less drawn towards the past and more so towards the future, and that the future seemed ominous. How does one deal with the never-ending flow of scary news? How does one continue to organize a festive event?

According to ecofeminists thinkers Anna Tsing and Donna Haraway, our time is characterised by a loss of refuge – “the earth is full of refugees, human and not, without refuge”(1). To the destruction of nature, the overturning of socially structuring institutions, backlash and the loss of social gains, the polarisation of political positions, the acceleration of work pace, rampant burn-outs, and the rise of extremism, it seems that both left and right agree that insecurity is a feeling shared by a majority. As a response to the unravelling of the world, Tsing and Haraway propose “making kin, finding what allows us to come together to face the end of a world.

Intersectional feminist thought is champion in the art of deconstructing the supposedly natural links between diverse forms of life, identities and ways of existing. It posits empathy as a superpower, the ultimate antidote to the blinding, paralyzing sociopathy of the system we live in. This year we invite you to open up to an emotional approach as well as a rational, bodily and/or spiritual one!
