Dry Your Feminist Tears

Performance

“Dry Your Feminist Tears” – proposed by Xenia Laffely and Anne-Valérie Zuber – original performance by Amal Alhaag and Maria Guggenbichler
Throughout history, female tears have been read as proof that women are weak, not in control of themselves, irrational and melodramatic. After all, “boys don’t cry” – it is crying that makes you a woman or feminized person. “Dry Your Feminist Tears” proposes to overthrow gendered norms of so-called ‘negative’ emotions like sadness, depression or despair; this participative performance opens up new understandings of the expression and sharing of such feelings – not as shameful or lonesome, but as social feelings and potential ground for being together. Owning the emotions we feel under “imperialist capitalist white supremacist patriarchy” (bell hooks), as well as their expressions (in anger, in tears), as tools for connection and empowerment.
